A 4-Day Entry-Level Workshop geared to provide the foundation for the preparation of project budgets in support of effective project planning, and improving performance.

This workshop is designed to explain and clarify what project budgeting is all about, so that each participant should fully grasp the concept behind the terms. It explains why budget development should flow from a strategic plan. This workshop introduces the foundation elements of the project budgeting process, and its alignment with the project plan towards the realization of long term goals. It introduces activity based costing and activity based budgeting at a basic level. Activity based budgeting addresses the key issue of how, where and why costs are incurred, thereby aligning the goal and objectives of the project to the actual resources allocated to each activity and task on the ground.
Desired Workshop Outcomes
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should have acquired a working knowledge how to:
- Recognise the importance of collecting information to create an accurate budget
- Understand how costs are classified and incurred
- Be able to construct a budget from an activity plan worksheet
- Understand the importance of planning, and its linkage to the budget
- Think more at the strategic level, and be more empowered in their role.

- Stages of the budget cycle
- Developing project activities, developing a task list, listing needed inputs
- Allocating programme-specific costs, common costs, and support costs
- Distinguish between programme and support activities
- The treatment of inflation and exchange rate variances
- Practicing developing an Activity-Based Budget
- Aligning the budget with the project plan
Learning Features
The workshop methodology is to combine the use of interactive facilitation supported by participatory learning through case-studies, creative thinking exercises, group exercises and presentations by the participants. This is followed up by a complimentary three month period of expert tutor support by email for all participants.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is best conducted with a maximum of 15 participants. It will benefit those involved in project management and budgeting in the NGO development sector. A background in accounting or finance is not required.
