Project Finance and Administration Management
A 5-Day Workshop structured for all finance, administrative, and supervisory staff in development NGOs who already possess a basic knowledge of financial procedures, but require a deeper understanding of the issues and processes needed to increase the level of accountability, transparency, effectiveness and efficiency in their organisation.

The objective of this workshop is to develop the core financial skills required to raise the competency level of staff at project level. Its focus is on learning with understanding, so as to build their confidence level, their capacity for empowerment and decision making ability. Bookkeeping and processes which can be automated by computer software are not the focus of this workshop.
This workshop presents both the theoretical and practical aspects of financial management and systems of accountability in projects, and their linkage to good project management for the achievement of strategic goals.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should have acquired a working knowledge of how to:
- Understand the structure and purpose of financial statements, and project budgets
- Distinguish between programme and support activities
- Prepare monthly expense reporting and reconciliation
- Understand accountability issues in project related expenditures
- Manage overheads with budget variance analysis
- Be empowered to think more at the strategic level.
Workshop Overview:
- The role of financial management in the project cycle
- Fixed assets, the asset register, and depreciation. Capitalise or expense?
- Banking matters, petty cash, and cash advance reconciliation
- Practicing accountability in procurement, payroll, per diems, travel, training, communication, and volunteer expenses
- Ethical considerations in decision making
- Cash flow planning, grant management, and multicurrency issues
- Budgeting for operations
- Information reporting for better donor relationships
- Preparation for audit, and year-end reviews
Learning Features
The workshop methodology is to combine the use of interactive facilitation supported by participatory learning through case-studies, creative thinking exercises, group exercises and presentations by the participants. This is followed up by a complimentary three month period of expert tutor support by email for all participants.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is best conducted with a maximum of 15 participants. It will benefit those involved in project management and budgeting in the NGO development sector. A background in accounting or finance is not required.
